Visual Novel

A visual novel from one manifest: a story in nodes, each a backdrop, the cast standing on it, and lines read one click at a time in a dialog box with the speaker's name. Choices branch the story, flags remember them (a question asked early opens a choice late), and routes lead to their own endings. The cast are painted figures (builds, hair, colours) or glyphs, placed left, centre or right, the speaker lit and the rest dimmed; backdrops are painted in code, kept until a node changes them, and a change fades through. Lines type themselves out, Auto reads on by itself, Skip runs to the next choice, and the History keeps every line said. The solver proves an ending can be reached and finds any route that leaves the reader with nothing to do. Three layouts: classic, cinema (letterboxed) and kiosk. Ships empty on purpose.
